Paan Singh Tomar

‘Watch it for Irrfan’ A comprehensive yet honest statement for this off beat(pretty much what will work) cinema. A story that dwelled in Tigmanshu Dhulia’s, of Haasil and Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster fame, mind since the days he was working on the sets of the Shekhar Kapoor’s Bandit Queen in Chambal valley. Inspired by the life of a talented and much forgotten  Paan Singh Tomar, poverty driven-Hunger forced farmer-turned athlete champion steeplechase runner-turned subedar- turned Dacoit (or better  ‘a rebel’ as he likes to be called), who inflicted much chaos and caused terror in the Chambal Valley. It is a story of free spirited sportsman who becomes an outlaw to get back at the cruel society.

The basic plot seems quirkily unusual and way out of the ‘bollywood’ box of ideas. Tigmanshu Dhulia has surely grown from being a television guy to being the imaginative man in the director’s seat. If not for anything else, this is a must watch for the extra effort taken by Irrfan to come up with one of his finest performance till date. Besides Irrfan, the cast also includes MahI Gill who will surely add to the power pack performance expected from the lead character. Paan Singh Tomar also brings you back Vipin Sharma aka Nandakishore Avasthi from the TZP fame, Nawazuddin Siddiqui and the only other known name in the cast is of that that Pakistani Journalist from Mighty Heart, Imran Hasnee. If all these weren’t enough, on the editor’s desk we have Aarti Bajaj, who has given us some of the finest cinemas in the last decade starting from Black Friday, Aamir, Jab We Met, Dev D and I can go with it until I talk about RockStar of the recent times. The music scored by Abhishek Ray isn’t something I am not expecting much from and would leave that for the Music Lovers to decide upon. Having said that, I must add “Mamaiya Kero Mama” seems to be interesting and already has some fans in the making. Continue reading

Dil Toh Baccha Hai Ji

When would men grow beyond love? Not really an interesting question to begin with and I, for sure, just like other men won’t have an answer to that one. Dil Toh Baccha Hai Ji is what you can call a perfect surprise from the hard hitting, on the face, truth bending, society provoking director Madhur Bhandarkar(MD). He, for his past and his “out of the Bollywood ishtyle”movies, would be amongst the few directors from whom you don’t expect a movie with such a “Raj Kapoor’ish” title and humor on the go(as it seems to be a rom-com). Dil Toh Baccha Hai Ji(hereafter DTBHJ) seems to be a well written and sensible cinema that might just be a reflection of how and what we (men) think when it comes to love or the parts of it(don’t ask me what the other parts would mean here).

DTBHJ, apart from being an MD cinema has a star cast that might surprise few like,(or may be unlike) me. With this cinema it seems that Omi Vaidya has arrived.. ahem .. once again and am not surprised. Continue reading

7 Khoon Maaf

Even if you have to kill seven of them to watch this one, you must, coz you will be forgiven. Trust me  on this one and since am not getting paid for writing this, you can.  7 Khoon Maaf(hereafter  7KM), yet another “killer”  from Vishal Bharadwaj  is sure on its way to make a killing. Last time they, Vishal and Ruskin Bond, worked together for Blue Umbrella and that cinema just strengthened Vishal’s position as a genuine and a powerful storyteller. 7KM is a story of Susanna and her 7 dead husbands or did she kill them? Yes that’s the story. Susanna, played by Priyanka Chopra, is a character sketched out from Ruskin Bond’s short story “Susanna’s Seven Husbands”. The story revolves around her and her brutal killing of those men whom she was married to or was that her seeking love, true love. Continue reading

Turning 30

The only 3 reasons why  I would watch “Turning 30”

1)      Prakash Jha

2)      Gul Panag

3)      Purab Kohli

And If I am asked to find more reasons for spending my time and money on this movie,  I might have to echo these  very three reasons. The movement I realized that, Turning 30 (hereafter t30) was from the Prakash Jha Production; I was more than surprised and added it to my “cinema bucket list 2010” though I never realized that the release would drag itself to 2011. The surprise because Alankita Srivastava (who has earlier worked for many of Jha’s politically correct ~incorrect movies) , Continue reading

Dhobi Ghat: Must Wash

Agree, disagree, hate me or kill me if you think you should but then she is hot. Kiran Rao, the woman I am talking about, has always made me feel like a pug in a mug.. small in a smaller world.  Now that she is all known for Dhobi Ghat more than her Mr Perfect, I think she has finally arrived for the masses who knew lesser of the individual she was. She is what you can call “Real wings of Unreal dreams” for she came out of nowhere and she was pretty clear that she wanted to make a movie and she did, what if she has Aamir for a husband, what if she has the money to spend. She has the balls to fulfill her dream and a dream that might possibly be enjoyed by millions like me. (I know I can write and keep writing about her.. may be some other time) Continue reading

No One Killed Jessica

“gaan phatkey haath mey aa jataa” Interesting Dialogue and I believe this is going to work in “No One Killed Jessica’s” favour. That kiss they(Rani and Vidhya) shared off screen might have shocked some but I think the movie has got more stuff to offer then all the promos and “tet-e-tet” about the movie. The movie, as the director claims, was inspired by a Times of India headlines after the influential accused were let go in the Jessica lal Murder case. I am not sure how much of the masala has been added to the real plot of Jessica Lal case, as the case itself was every bit “worth making a movie” stuff. Continue reading
